Each summer, consumer electronics gurus peer into their crystal balls to anticipate what hot gadgets will be considered must-haves for the upcoming holiday season. This year, those electronics taking center stage consist of some no-brainers as well as a few surprises. They're fun, they're innovative, and they're sure to be sold out by the end of November. Here's a preview of the hot gadgets that will be in the news and on almost everyone's holiday wish list:

1. Apple iPhone. Steve Jobs has done it again and designed a totally innovative device that's so much more than a mobile phone. With a gorgeous appearance, a bright three-and-a-half inch display, and an intuitive touchscreen user interface, the iPhone is captivating. And that's before you even get to the features, which include an exceptional cell phone with visual voicemail, a digital camera, email functionality, a web browser, an iPod for music, and SMS. The applications, such as Google maps, stocks, weather, notes, and so forth, are just as impressive. As is the $500 price tag. Nonetheless, the iPhone is sure to top many holiday wish lists.

2. i-Sing from Outrageous. Consumer electronics and toy company Outrageous has taken the "American Idol" phenomenon to the logical step with i-Sing, a specialized MP3 player that is, for lack of a better term, a next generation handheld karaoke machine. After buying MP3 downloads, users can load them into the player, then use proprietary software to input the lyrics of the songs - either the original lyrics or those written by the user. Users can then easily remove the original vocals from a song and record their own voices over the melodies while reading a display of the lyrics. With an internal speaker and microphone, as well as a high quality display and earphones, i-Sing can be used to create music that users can then upload to YouTube, MySpace, and other social networking sites. And, at around $129, i-Sing is a sure-fire hit.

3. Nintendo Wii. Although the Nintendo Wii gaming console has been out for almost a year, its scarcity will still make it a hot commodity this holiday season - and for good reason. With its innovative controller and Nunchuk, Wii has taken gaming to the next level. But the Wii is much more than a gaming console. It also offers Web browsing, shopping, photo sharing, news, and much more. Now that the use of the system is ramping up, there are an increasing number of video games available for the Wii - which will also be hot this holiday season.

Each year, several hot gadgets emerge as top sellers for the holiday season. This year, you can bet that the iPhone, i-Sing, and Wii will make the cut.

E-Tailers' Dream Season: Visions of Runaway Hits Dance in Their Heads

By Paul Korzeniowski

Deep-pocketed customers are often drawn to technology-based products. "Digital photo frames, digital cameras, laptops and GPS systems are products that we expect to do well this year," said Chris Madaus, vice president of marketing for Staples Business Delivery. Home entertainment systems have been popular in the past few years.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas -- at least on major retailers' Web sites. Banner ads are popping up on major e-commerce sites -- including Amazon.com and Wal-Mart.com -- highlighting top-selling computers, DVDs, toys and consumer electronics items as well as offering hints to help shoppers find something special for friends and loved ones. Yet while this year's online sales are once again expected to set new benchmarks, identifying this season's product and promotional hits is not as easy as it was in 2006.

Last year was a strong one for retailers because a few highly touted products were just making their way to market. Sony's (NYSE: SNE) Latest News about Sony PlayStation 3 Latest News about PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Latest News about Nintendo Wii Latest News about Wii had consumers frantically banging away at their keyboards or sleeping in store parking lots in order to purchase these high-demand products of low availability. In fact, an Amazon.com promotion focusing on low priced PS3s was so well received that consumers knocked the company's Web site offline.

The video game market is expected to again drive traffic Over 800,000 High Quality Domains Available For Your Business. Click Here. to the big e-commerce sites. To get a jump on the holiday spending, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Latest News about Microsoft announced the latest version of its popular "Halo" video game for the Xbox 360 Latest News about Xbox 360 in September. In October, Sony announced a bundling of the "Spider-Man 3" DVD with a 40 GB version of the PS3 as well as cutting the price of its 80 GB system.

In Search of a Runaway Hit

No consumer electronics device is expected to create the buzz that the consoles have in the past few years. The closest is Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) Latest News about Apple iPhone, which has been out since June and continues to generate a great deal of buzz.

For those e-commerce vendors searching for a new solid product rather than a megahit, i-Sing from the consumer electronics and toy company Outrageous is garnering attention. The device is a specialized MP3 player that functions as a handheld Let RIM Professional Services help you optimize mobile solutions. Click to learn more. karaoke machine.

A number of other items also are expected to sell well. Elmo has been a favorite among children for many years, and last year's 10th anniversary Elmo, dubbed "T.M.X.," was one of the Christmas season's hottest toys. Elmo has become such a holiday staple that details about this year's model are being closely guarded with a much anticipated unveiling by Fisher-Price on Nov. 8.

Toys for Grown-Ups

Discretionary products for grown-ups are also popular during the holidays. "Jewelry was a big seller for us last year and something that we are emphasizing again this year," noted Geoff Atkinson, marketing chief of staff at Overstock.com Latest News about Overstock.com. "A few years ago, consumers would have been leery of spending a few thousand dollars during an online transaction. Now, they do not bat an eye."

Deep-pocketed customers are often drawn to technology-based products. "Digital photo frames, digital cameras, laptops and GPS systems are products that we expect to do well this year," said Chris Madaus, vice president of marketing for Staples (Nasdaq: SPLS) Latest News about Staples Business Delivery. Home entertainment systems have been popular in the past few years. Prices for high-definition TVs have been falling; that's one reason why companies such as Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) Latest News about Best Buy have fared so well recently.

Once consumers purchase HD TVs, their living rooms become virtual movie theaters displaying the latest popular releases. Harry Potter has been a favorite of Amazon.com, and the 2.5 million copies sold of the latest book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, represent the company's largest new product release ever. The most recent movie, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," is expected to be available during the holiday season. Last summer was filled with sequels, so during the holiday season "Shrek 3," "Spider-Man 3" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" should be flying off of the shelves at e-commerce warehouses.

Christmas Before the Leaves Turn

The wide variety of items being touted underscores the holiday season's importance. Because it represents such a significant portion of their overall revenue, many retailers have been starting the holiday season earlier and earlier each year. Some e-tailers, such as Bath & Body Works, started running holiday promotions in October.

Wal-Mart began discounting its holiday items at the end of October, reducing prices between 10 to 50 percent on a select number of toys. The first round cut the prices of Tonka Trucks to US$19.76 from $27.44, Kid-Tough Digital Camera to $54.88 from $64.88, the FurReal Squawkers Parrot to $54.88 from $69.96 and the "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" game to $12.88 from $18.96. The retailer plans to announce new discounts every week through the holiday shopping season.

As a result of such promotions, the traditional holiday calendar has been changing. "Our peak holiday selling days are about the same every year, but they do not align with retail's Black Friday or Cyber Monday -- although these are still big days for eBags," said Jonathan Fox, director of backpacks and sports at eBags.com. "For the past few years, eBags peak days have fallen during the second week of December."

Picking Up the Shipping Costs

Selecting an item is only part of the purchasing process. Traditionally, shipping charges have been a deterrent for online shoppers. "Free shipping is becoming much more common among e-commerce sites," said Patti Freeman Evans, senior analyst at market research firm JupiterResearch.

In addition to offering free delivery and the latest and greatest products, the e-commerce giants are trying to beef up help behind the scenes. In October, Amazon.com added 200 full-time and part-time customer service positions to its Grand Forks, N.D., customer service center to help keep pace with holiday traffic.

This focus is in line with a few fundamental truths that retailers need to remember during the season. "The most important thing for our customers is that they, one, receive great customer service and, two, receive their package on time for the holiday," Fox told the E-Commerce Times. "Without those two things, nothing else a retailer does really matters."

Cool Gadget: I-sing MP3 Karaoke Player

In case all the other Karaoke gadgets that we previously mentioned at CG don’t please your highly needs, maybe the MP3 Recording Karaoke Player is what you’ve been looking for. I can see some positive points when comparing it to others of the same kind, like not needing to spend money on the unique CDs that normal Karaoke machines use.

While using the MP3 Recording Karaoke, you only need to (legally) download songs from the internet and transfer them to the computer via the USB port, with the help of the included special software you can start singing your favorite songs in no time. And guess what? The final result, be it good or bad, is automatically recorded to a MP3 file.

If you seriously think that your voice is a match with a specific song, you can mute the vocal sound of the original track. On the other hand, if the final result is not that good, you can adjust it by lowering the sound of the original vocals – creating what is hopefully a good back-up voice.

The MP3 Recording Karaoke Player is able to read WMA, WAV and MP3 files, it comes with a microphone (duh), a headphone jack in case you don’t want to disturb others, and a speaker so you can actually share the experience with other people. If the 512MB of memory isn’t enough, there is a card slot for SD and MMC memory cards so you can expand the storage capacity.

Price: $120

Reuters: Yahoo, Gracenote launch lyrics service

By Sue Zeidler

Photo
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc. and digital media company Gracenote launched an online lyrics service on Tuesday, the first industry-backed effort in a market dominated by unauthorized, rogue Web sites.

Song lyrics are among the top searches performed on the Web, but consumers have largely relied on unlicensed sources that often provide inaccurate and incomplete lyrics and do not compensate composers for their work.

"Finally, a free, legal and definitive way to settle a bet with the guy sitting next to you at the bar who is certain the Ramones' most famous anthem declares, 'I wanna piece of bacon,'" said Ian Rogers, general manager of Yahoo! Music, which will offer lyrics to hundreds of thousands of songs.

The Yahoo deal follows an agreement last summer between music publishers and Gracenote, giving Gracenote the rights to lyrics from the North American catalogs of Bertelsmann AG's BMG Music Publishing, Vivendi's Universal Music Publishing Group, Sony/ATV Music Publishing, jointly owned by Sony Corp. and Michael Jackson, peermusic and other publishers.

Terms of the Yahoo deal were not disclosed but officials said it was a variable revenue-sharing agreement based on advertising.

Gracenote Chief Executive Craig Palmer said licensing lyrics should boost worldwide music publishing revenues, estimated at about $4 billion annually, with the words to songs ultimately providing as much as $100 million in annual revenues in about 10 years as the market expands with new opportunities like online subscriptions, downloads and automotive distribution deals.

The deal caps months of discussions between Yahoo and Gracenote, which said it was also talking with various other music partners, like Apple Inc.'s iTunes.

"We wouldn't be in the business to launch just one service, so stay tuned," said Palmer.

He said publishers embraced his company's plan to create a lyrics database because they felt lyrics were an untapped resource at a time when consumers were increasingly getting them through the various rogue sites.  Continued...
